WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET
by Ashlea Barker
“What
you see is what you get”; isn’t that a well know phrase amongst us?
Apparently children and teenagers look beyond that phrase trying to fulfill the wishes/likes of others.
Everyone of us is different. We are different in many ways such as weight,
height, size, talent, culture, and colour. People have become full of desire, wanting to be something or someone they are
not. Young children are being influenced by the people around them. They feel, for example, that they need to be “pretty”
or “skinny” in order for others to like them.
Why
is it that teenagers pick out so-called “differences” in others and use them to hurt? Because of this judgment,
children and teenagers are becoming people they are not. They are putting aside their good character traits in order to impress
others, hoping they will be accepted.
Everyone has the right
to be who they are and should be respected for being themselves. A person should not have to change in order to be accepted
because each person is an individual with a personality of his or her own.
I’ve learned from experience that it’s so much greater to be yourself and what you see is what
you get.
